Bryanston School J14/J15 Regatta – Saturday 26th June
A perfect summer’s afternoon on the Dorset Stour provided an ideal setting for a return to competitive rowing. And for our enthusiastic squad of youngsters it was an opportunity to experience the exhilaration of racing for the first time.
The usual brisk Bryanston schedule kept races coming thick and fast, supporters were enthralled and coaches kept on their toes. The format was simple; three divisions, each kicking-off with a time-trial followed by two boat head-to-head racing with pairings determined by time-trial results. This made for some close and exciting racing and most had the chance to race single, double and quad sculls over the course of the afternoon.
There were medals to be won but the most important thing was just to have a go and have fun! In addition to the Bryanston squad, local ‘opposition’ was provided by Lymington and Poole Rowing Clubs.
Christchurch RC was very well represented by (J15s) Erin Casserley, Luke Cavill, Kirsten DuToit, Caitlin Lockey, Oscar London, Tom Walker, Charlotte Wiener, (J14) Matas Volungevicius and (J13) Alyce Tate. Ed Erwin was on hand as coxswain and general helper which was very much appreciated.
And so to the medallists: WJ15 quad - Charlotte, Erin, Kirsten Caitlin & Alyce (coxswain);
WJ15 double - Erin & Caitlin; J15 double - Tom & Oscar; J15 single – Tom. Not forgetting other great performances; Matas was looking like a dead cert for a win in his single but for an unfortunate ‘crab’ just short of the finish-line. The J15 quad of Tom, Luke, Matas, Oscar and Ed (coxswain) put in a very tidy performance to finish second overall and Alyce put in a very creditable performance in her single against much older competition.
As usual the Bryanston team made us feel very welcome and provided our J14/15s with some invaluable racing experience which will stand them in good stead for future competitions.
