Molesey Regatta

Molesey regatta normally marks the end of the river racing season. Christchurch took a squad of 14 and 15 year olds to race over the reasonably straight 500 metre downstream section of the Thames. Some of the youngsters were racing in small boats for the first time but displayed real enthusiasm in preparing for their races. The first success was with Maddie Grainger in the J14 single scull who showed incredible skill and determination to row through her opponent to win by a boat length in the final. A very popular win followed next with the J15 quad of Olly Gillingham, Ben Ingrem, Cian Everett, Josh Brangan and cox Bay Hill were still moving away from their opponent as they crossed the finishing line in their final.

Three of the quad then moved into singles and their competition with a sculler from Mundener Rv 1912 in Germany was to provide some of the most thrilling racing of the day. First to take on the German sculler was Josh Brangan who was fighting neck and neck all the way to the line. After a few seconds consideration, the race was declared a dead heat and both scullers were returned to the start. The second race was nearly a carbon copy of the first but unfortunately this time Josh lost out by a couple of feet. In the final, Ben Ingrem came up against the German sculler but he was unable to overcome him as he lost out by only one third of a length.
