Will Tate from Christchurch Rowing Club was in action once again this weekend at the British Rowing Junior Championships at Nottingham Water Sports Centre where the best young rowers in the country come to compete. The weather was very windy with a strong head wind making it difficult to achieve a fast time with several rowers capsizing due to the rough water. Will was rowing in the J16 single sculls and against a very strong field of 46 he came a credible 6th in the 1500m time trial on Saturday. This put him into the 2000m semi final on Sunday which was straight side by side racing. The weather had much improved from the day before and he started well, despite 'catching a crab' 3 strokes into the race but this did not deter him and he finished in what was a very close race in 3rd place gaining him a spot in the coveted A final later in the day.
The A final, also over 2000m, was very keenly contested in the first half of the race but then 2 rowers pulled slightly away from the field leaving Will to have his own battle for 3rd place against a very tough competitor for Chester le Street. Will won the battle and with some very determined rowing coming into the last 250m claimed the bronze medal by 5 seconds . A big thankyou as always to his coaches at Christchurch Rowing Club for all their efforts in assisting with this great achievement for him.
