Walton and Weybridge Regatta : Saturday 9th June 2018
Christchurch Rowing Club’s junior squad headed to Surrey to compete at the Walton & Weybridge Regatta - formerly Walton Amateur Regatta - held annually since 1862 on the River Thames at Walton-on-Thames. The squad was a mix of experienced competitors and others nervously anticipating their first ever race.
Two-boat, side-by-side racing over a 1000 metre course meant that each category comprised several rounds.
Cian Everett – junior 14 single sculls – took to the water for the first race of the day. A confident start kept him in contention for most of the race, just being edged out in the final stages.
Sol Hewitt faced tough opposition in the first round of his junior 16 single sculls event. But he judged the pace perfectly to take the bell by about two lengths. His semi-final opponent mounted no less of a challenge but a well timed push put Sol through to the final which he came through to claim the title.
First afloat for Christchurch in the afternoon division was Molly Morris contesting girls’ junior 15 single sculls. Two strong performances took her to the semi-finals. A close fought race ended with Molly just losing out to strong opposition on this occasion.
Cian Everett and Joshua Brangan combined in the junior 14 double sculls event and can be proud of a solid performance and close finish.
Amy Starks and Jess Larner also returned a creditable performance in their first ever competitive outing in the girls’ junior 14 double sculls. Both were enthused and are looking forward to their next regatta.
Last-up, William Tate fought his way determinedly through three rounds and a final to take the junior 15 single sculls prize; a fitting end to a successful day for the Christchurch juniors.
The squad is looking forward to its next regatta at Egham in early July.
