The 6th and 7th of June saw a sunny weekend of rowing on the Isle of Wight at Ryde and Shanklin Hants and Dorset Regattas.
Ryde regatta took place on Saturday, although the sun held out for the day high winds meant rough conditions on the water, Christchurch Rowing Club saw a win in the novice men’s A crew: Jack (str) Gaston, Isaac Gaston, Marcus Lewis, Sean Cooney & Adam Chadwick (cox) in their very first coastal regatta.
The weather held out for Shanklin and sea conditions were much better with calm water for most of the day’s racing. The Christchurch novice men who won at Ryde rowed a fantastic first Junior race which saw them gain a place in the Junior men’s final alongside another of Christchurch’s junior men’s crew.
Both Christchurch Junior men’s crews rowed extremely well in the Junior men’s final but following a crash at the buoy turn between Southsea and BTC officials called a re-row for the final. During the second row of the final BTC took first place.
Christchurch ladies’ masters’ crew won first place at Shanklin. Lucy Hart (str), Rachael Williams, Jane Rafferty, Faye Standley & Sam Erwin (cox). Their success at Christchurch and Shanklin places them at the top of the league.
Junior ladies’ B crew took a place in the final, however first place was taken by Coalporters. It was an extremely successful weekend for the Coalporters crew, who won their junior title the previous day with a win in Ladies’ novice race at Ryde. The Coalporters crew has been formed in partnership with Southampton Solent University.
The next regatta takes place on the 20th of June and is being hosted by Woolston rowing club.
