179 boats set out on the Stour River this Sunday for one of the final head races before the start of the coastal season. This course distance of 3.3k was a change for the crews who are used to the longer 5k heads. The wind picked up on the harbour and stayed sharp throughout the day with the sun finally gracing us with its presence later during the 2nd division. The junior men’s 8 from Christchurch had the fastest time overall of the day with a time of 9 minutes 16 seconds. This 8 was made up of Sam Erwin(cox), Richard Quinn, Marlowe Tamlyn, Jordan Partington, Tom Mahy, Dave Parker, George Robinson, Harry Lawton Hurst and Kit Mersey. Christchurch also enjoyed wins in the J16 boys quad, a J16 single (Ben Cavill), women’s open double, senior men’s four, WJ14 single (Keira Browning) and WJ18 8+ girls. An encouraging time of 11 minutes 35 seconds was achieved by the junior mens 4 (Dave Parker, George Robinson, Harry Lawton Hurts, Kit Mersey and Sam Erwin(cox)) followed by a joint first in the J14 single. The novice men also closed down their gap and took a close 2nd behind Southampton University. These crews now have an understanding of what is needed for continuing results at the next head race in Southampton on the 18th of April.
