With the Spring Head season just beginning, Christchurch Rowing Club set out to make their mark with eights and fours on Sunday at Itchen Head, a 5000metre time trial. The Head saw a very cold day which stayed sunny throughout with a nice tail wind supporting the more experienced crews but testing the less experienced novices. The three Christchurch eights comprised two women’s crews and one junior men’s crew. The women’s eight consisting of; Amelia Wood-Power, Dani Elmy-Liddiard, Holly Strange, Sophie Heath, Rosie Ashely-East, Charlotte Cordery, Millie Wells and Sam Erwin(cox) took a triumphant win over the other Christchurch crew and Itchen’s junior ladies. The Christchurch Junior Men’s eight; Harry Lawton Hurst, Kit Mersey, Marlowe Tamlyn, Richard Quinn, George Robinson, Dave Parker, Tom Mahy, Jordan Partington and Sam Erwin(cox), also found a victory over Southampton University and Itchen Imperial with the fastest time of the day 15 minutes 45 seconds. A boys novice four; Jack Gaston, Isaac Gaston, Marcus Lewis, Sean Cooney and Grace Tebbutt(cox) took a comfortable 3rd place just 7 seconds behind the experienced BTC crew who have been competing for a year already. The second Christchurch crew in this race (coxed by Libby Perry) unfortunately caught a crab putting them off course allowing the Itchen Imperial Crew to overhaul them. The next head race these crews will be attending is over the same course hosted by BTC Rowing Club on the 7th of March where Christchurch will be seeking more wins and the Men’s novice crew will be looking to close the 7 second gap.
