CRC finished 2014 competition with a good turnout of 20 crews in Masters and Juniors for Walton Small Boats Head and were blessed with a crisp, clear, still morning which produced some notable performances.
The pennant in WJ16 1x went to Lizzie Lander and in WJ15 1x to Stephanie Dodsworth who found the downstream conditions to their liking on the 3000metre course starting at D’Oyly Carte Island. There was a pennant for Charley Wedderburn and Lizzie Lander in the WJ16 2x and Stephanie Dodsworth and Kiera Browning were second in WJ15 2x just 5 seconds off the winners. These were all against big fields of up to 25 entries raising the Club’s profile and are a credit to the coaching team. The Junior Christmas party Friday evening had no lasting ill effects obviously.
Emma Kelly and Lucy Hart making her debut for Christchurch, secured the WMB 2x pennant to complete the haul. The Masters squad also managed to get in the frame with Rob Standley and Mike Kelly third in MSC2x producing the Club’s fastest time of the day 10mins 15.3 secs, Jane Rafferty and Andy Galloway third in MXMD 2x with Faye Standley and Jenny Emery third in WME 2x.
Fortunately none of the Christchurch scullers capsized but three from other clubs did; the water temperature was a chilly 4deg C but all were rescued quickly with no ill effects thanks to the safety boats. Training continues through January in readiness for the next targeted event, Thames Valley Trial Head at the ever popular Eton Dorney Lake on 1st February 2015.
