With summer fading into autumn, the 8-strong nucleus of the Christchurch Rowing Club Masters squad targeted the Ross-on-Wye Regatta weekend and produced some mellow fruitfulness, winning no fewer than six events against strong competition. Clubs from as far afield as Totnes, Chester and Guildford gather for the two-day Junior, Masters and Senior events in this picturesque Herefordshire setting.
The CRC Men’s Masters C Quadruple scull A Galloway, P Dakin, R Standley, M Kelly(str) inflicted a convincing defeat on Trent RC and divided for the double sculls events with Kelly and Standley beating Bewdley RC for the C category, Galloway and Dakin beating a Grosvenor/Royal Chester composite in the masters D final.
J Rafferty(str) and R Williams making their double sculls debut, won Women’s Masters D Novice by three lengths over Monmouth and moved up to IM3 for the Senior regatta where they put up a good challenge to eventual finalists. Joining forces with F Standley and E Kelly(str) R Standley(cox) they also won Women’s Masters D coxed fours beating Local s Ross in the heat, Royal Chester in the semi-final before victory with a two length lead over Dart Totnes.
F Standley also won the Masters E single sculls event against Dart Totnes in the final.
In the Senior regatta on a very misty and damp Bank holiday Monday the indefatigable eight athletes raced much younger opposition in seven events, reaching three finals with another victory for the Men’s IM3 Quad rounding off the weekend.
