Poole Regatta

Christchurch Rowing Club Winners at Poole Regatta 2014
With the coastal rowing season nearing the closing stages, Poole regatta was one of the few remaining opportunities for clubs and crews to attain the goals aimed for at the outset.

Following a wet start the day brightened and the wind freshened to produce some lively conditions and a number of capsizes amongst the less experienced scullers.

The Christchurch Ladies Novice Four, E Brad, L Perry, G Tebbutt, R Ashley-East(str), A Horn(cox), finally won through taking the club to equal first place in the Championship, level on five points with Itchen Imperial. But for this crew of resolute youngsters it was the win they had been rowing for all season, often in the frame but pipped for that all important first place on a number of occasions. Saturday saw them well placed in the heat with a safe tactical second place taking them into the

six- boat final where water conditions were considerably rougher. From the turn the only threat was the Southsea/Shanklin composite and both crews battled with a heavy beam sea and cross/head wind, checking the boats’ progress every few strokes. But it was the CRC crew which had the edge and maintained their technique giving them a four length lead at the finish for a well earned win.

Christchurch were very evident in the Mixed J16 Fours , with three crews in the race producing a very close finish, the A crew T Mahy, R Hart, L Lander, R Quinn(str), A Horn(cox) victorious by just half a length over the B crew.

The Senior Fours race produced an interesting situation with Itchen Imperial, reigning South Coast Champions, making a reappearance and getting their first win of the season. BTC already have the

H and D championship secured and the contest is now for the second berth in the SCC race with Lymington, Christchurch and Itchen each having one point and just one regatta, BTC on 9th August at Weston Shore Southampton, remaining.
