Southampton ARC staged their annual regatta at Weston on Southampton Water and could not have wished for better conditions; warm sunshine, light airs and flat water produced some excellent racing and an enjoyable spectacle.
Christchurch RC Men’s Novice A and B crews made it through heats to the final but victory is still proving elusive and in a thrilling race Southsea RC held on to win by a canvas with the three leading boats all within half a boat length, BTC crews in second and third places. The Christchurch B crew doubled up and competed in the J16 event where they came home in first place just half a length over BTC, their second win at this status and a confidence builder for their Novice racing.
Five regattas into the season and the Ladies Junior single sculls event has only been contested twice. Seven scullers took to the water for the Junior and Senior races to be run simultaneously and the Christchurch colours were conspicuous against the other six, all from Itchen Imperial RC. So against the odds, a second win for Jasmine Hunt of CRC and sights turning towards a Junior Sculls championship by the season’s end. The Men’s Senior pair Foley and Wakelin looking to repeat last week’s victory had to settle for second place with Itchen taking the prime position.
Saturday sees the Hants and Dorset Clubs descend on Swanage for one of the most popular regattas where a large turnout is expected to produce some good quality competition and a foretaste of the South Coast Championships to be held there in September.
