Christchurch Rowing Club’s Junior squad exceeded expectations at the three-day national Schools Regatta, bringing home two medals.
Lizzie Lander in J15 single sculls thrilled supporters to take silver just half a length behind Semple of Heddington School BC on Friday.
The J15 coxed quadruple scull Charlie Wedderburn, Beth Bailey, Lizzie Lander, Libby Booth(str), Martha Robinson(cox) put up a good time in the processional eliminator on Friday securing a good lane allocation for their semi-final which they won by two lengths. In the Sunday final, just one boat length spanned the three leading boats, Heddington School and Henley Rowing Club just edging Christchurch into the bronze medal position.
National Schools Regatta is the largest Junior rowing event in the UK attracting around 1200 boats, from single sculls to eights, onto the six-lane course at NWSC Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham.
Squad coach Steve Aldridge commented that in the lead up Lander looked a medal prospect having won the J15 Indoor Rowing Championship and on her performance at the GB trials in April. It was only after the time trial on Friday that we got the measure of the J15 quad and a medal position became conceivable for them. To come away with a bronze and silver against the level of competition from the big public schools was an excellent outcome.
