Five young ladies of Christchurch Rowing Club provided a bright spot in an otherwise dismal day at the 57th South Coast Championship and Junior Regatta held in Deal, Kent on Saturday 14th September.
Early conditions were favourable, despite light rain, and forecast to improve but a strengthening wind created dangerous water conditions and the event was eventually curtailed, but not before the CRC Women’s J16 coxed quadruple scull Rebecca Hart, Lizzie Lander, Libby Booth, Erin Robinson(str), Grace Tebutt(cox) had produced a comfortable win in their heat and a three length victory in the final over Itchen Imperial with Worthing in third place.
In the Ladies Senior Championship the Christchurch crew Christie Quinn, Laura Standley, Kate Allen, Jasmine Hunt(str), Grace Tebutt(cox), rowed well in difficult conditions and a close race to finish second just a length down on Shoreham with H and D champions Itchen third by a further half a length.
H and D champions Ryde showed their quality in the Junior Men’s Championship with a three length conquest of Herne Bay with rivals Lymington in third place.
There was a five boat contest for the Men’s Senior Championship with no entries from WEARA and as crews came through Deal Pier at the 1000 metre halfway mark Deal appeared to have victory in their grasp with a significant lead over Bexhill in second and Itchen third. 300 metres past the pier BTC filled up and retired as did Christchurch soon after but Itchen had rowed down the leaders and with 250 metres to go surged into the lead with an exemplary finish four lengths over Bexhill, Deal having dropped back to third place.
With the Ladies Open Fours on the water the decision was taken to abandon further racing and nine races, including the Ladies Junior Championship and Junior/Senior Championship were lost.
The Hants and Dorset ARA took the Eileen and Eric Crow Memorial Challenge Cup on aggregate for Championship events with 21 points against CARA with15 points.
2014 Championship Regatta will take place in Swanage on 13th and 14thSeptember and Christchurch are actively recruiting as winter training gets under way, particularly in the 18 to 25 age group.
